Debenhams no more

This is the rather forlorn looking Debenhams store in Harrogate on a freezing cold Sunday morning. Sadly it will not be reopening as the chain of department stores recently went out of business.
Debenhams have been a familiar name on high streets all over the country for many years. Debenhams Ltd. was incorporated in 1903, although the Debenham name goes back to 1813.
Debenhams have been in this building in Harrogate since 1958. Before then it was Busby's store. There are some interesting old photos of the building and some of its history here.
Over the last few weeks all of the stock and a lot of the internal fixtures and fittings appear to have been removed. It is another casualty of the decline of high street stores.
