Waitangi Day on the Water.

February the 6th is our National Day and marks the anniversary of the signing on 6th February 1840 – of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is regarded as the founding document of the nation.  Today is the public holiday.  It was a sunny and calm morning which are the only sea conditions I like.  The forester suggested he would like to take me from Kaiteriteri to Torrent Bay in our boat.  I rarely set forth in the boat.  This morning was perfect with lots of other boats, kayaks, yachts and sea shuttles plying up and down.   The main blip is Split Apple Rock which is made of of granite from the Cretaceous Period.  It is in the shape of an apple which has been cut in half. The cleft to produce two sides of the 'apple' was a naturally occurring joint.  Joints occur commonly in granite and are planes of weakness that rain and waves exploit.  (Thank you Wiki ) First extra is Anchorage where we beached the boat  and had a sandwich and a swim.  The yacht was loading on trampers who where getting a lift further up the coast before walking some more of the Able Tasman Track.  Second extra is the rock from the other side.  We went around it in the boat.  At low tide you can wade out to it.  On arriving back at Kaiteriteri when the boat was on the trailer we had another swim.  The perfect summer day for me when I spend several hours in my togs/swimming suit/bathers.
