On my way home from work, I came across this burning dumpster. Plumes of smoke billowed in the air as members of the Civil Defence looked on from across the road.

Waste management is a big problem in Gaza, which lacks the facilities to adequately deal with the volume of waste produced in this densely-populated territory.

I'm glad to report that, a few days later, it was reported that the first recycling plant in Gaza had been put into operation.

It will only go some way to addressing the problem, however. Until the closure is lifted, and restrictions on imports and exports are removed, the problem is likely to persist.
