The 'Russian' Memorial

A visit to Lewes with the spaniel this morning. This obelisk in the churchyard of St John sub Castro is known as the Russian Memorial. It was erected in 1877 in memory of the 28 Finnish soldiers who died while prisoners in Lewes Naval Prison during the Crimean War.

While in the churchyard I saw my first butterfly of the year, a male Brimstone.  Looking at my butterfly records tells me its the earliest Brimstone I've seen this century.
