MILWAUKEE SKYLINE

It isn't a Chicago or New York skyline...but it's Wisconsin's largest city and it's the best we have to offer.

J and I drove to the big city yesterday...specifically in the home territory of dfb24. This is just north of her in the City of Bay View looking northward toward Milwaukee. Lake Michigan is to the right of the image and the water you see is part of Lak Mich...a bay, hence the breakwaters and boating areas. Bay View gets its name from the view of this bay.

On the left you can see the Hoan Bridge (named after an old Milwaukee mayor)...the famous Bridge that Goes Nowhere. The tall building to the right is the all glass world headquarters of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance...it's brand new. Yes, policy holders, your premiums bought and paid for this building.

Extra #1....looking at a typical bluff south of Milwaukee in Grant Park. Unusually high lake levels have increased bluff erosion around the entire lake. Several lakeside, bluff top homes have slid into the lake the last few years.

Extra #2.....looking southward along the lake in Bay View. Yes...the water really looks that color. With the invasion of ocean living critters including Zebra and Quagga mussels, the water has been strained clear of plankton and is now more clear than ever. The downside is that the plankton baby fishes need to feed on is in short supply.....ipso facto, many native fishes are in steep decline. The once famous Wisconsin tradition of the Friday Night Fish Fry, usually involving native Lake Perch, has been supplanted by cod or some other non-native ocean fish imported to the area. Anyone who has ever consumer fresh caught fish (meaning THAT DAY) will tell you there's no comparison in taste between fresh and 3 day old fish.

For you Wisconsinites reading this missive, the cod you think tastes good at your local fish fry tastes nothing like cod caught that day along the Atlantic coast. Fresh-caught means THAT DAY....anything less is inferior. If you don't believe me, head to Maine or Massachusetts or anywhere along Chesapeake Bay and have some FRESH sea food. Heaven!
