Ryan's Heir

After all the hype and excitement in the press overnight of Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs's impending 1000th game as a professional footballer today (as well as his new 1 year contract for next year, that will find him playing as an over-40) what else could feature today? I sat supping my coffee excitedly in Booths supermarket this morning whilst on the breakfast run, and marvelled at him as a player and person. Who cares if he has had hair transplant work ala young Shrek Rooney; and how on earth will he ever be replaced?

Given this potential landmark for Giggs today, as well as the visit to Old Trafford of Delia Smith's Canaries (she is joint majority shareholder in Norwich City FC, for all you sadly uninitiated), you would have half expected her Thousand Island Dressing to be drizzled onto the sandwiches of Keano's infamous Prawn Sandwich Brigade sitting in the Executive Boxes at halftime.

Sadly it was not to be today, as I heard after the game he was not even on the bench for the comfortable 4:0 win.

Am I bothered? No, because I reckon Fergie is just saving him to come on as a second half substitute against Real Madrid in the Champions League QF second leg at home on Tuesday night.

What a standing ovation he will get, and in such an iconic game to boot!

Anyone have a spare ticket? Please!!
