More Recording

The last time I showed our hymn-recording setup we were in the dining room, using the writing box to support the music. For the last two recordings I have been in the sitting room but now I have a bespoke book rest to support the music. How posh is that!

When we cleared my family home I kept a sewing table that had been left to my Mother by her Aunt, for whom it had been commissioned by her husband.. Apparently as a young girl Mum used to play with all the little compartments. A very pretty piece it was, but with several problems we hoped to overcome. By the time we fully investigated these we found within the unseen softwood  areas a woodworm infestation so bad that all our treatment failed. The decision was tough but there was no alternative to burning the infected parts. (This, it must be said, before we realised the BBC was running a programme called The Repair Shop, for which It might have been a suitable candidate). However, we retained the larger panels of good timber, beautiful walnut.

Modelled on a book rest loaned by our pianist/interim music director, Mr Flum used some of this timber to make a book rest of a suitable angle for reading, wide enough to take an open hymn book or A4 sheet and space for the phone, (from which I hear the pre-recorded accompaniment through headphones) It may appear a little cumbersome but it is sturdy enough to prevent any wobbling from even heavy books.

So, it may not be as pretty as the sewing table but at least I have something useful. Now, what can we do with those turned legs...?
