Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific, measuring 10 miles long, 1 mile wide, and more than 3,500ft deep. We made our way up here in the late afternoon and the drive was stunning, as was the campsite, which we had all to ourselves. Our tent was parked in the midst of rainforest with birdsong everywhere!

In the morning, we set off to meet Eric for breakfast in Kalaheo, where he advised us about a Zodiac boat ride and managed to get us a good deal for a trip the next day. Yay for Eric! We then headed to Barking Sands Beach.

Barking Sands Beach is part of the longest and widest stretches of beach on Hawaii - 15 miles of continuous sand that can be over 300ft wide in parts. Unfortunately, the US military have most of this beach as part of their Pacific Missile Range Facility, and tourists are definitely not allowed. Locals told us that they do indeed see the odd missile winging its way across the ocean.
