Dutch Skies

Punt van Reide

A dark sunrise over Dollart at Punt van Reide.

This morning I got out of bed at 5.15 to capture the sunrise at Punt van Reide. I didn't have high hopes after lots of grey days, but I just had to get out again. Driving in the dark, suddenly a mallard appeared by the side of the road. It walked away, but then suddenly took off and turned towards me. I braked, but a collission was unavoidable and the mallard hit my windshield. No damage to my car, fortunately, but I feared for the mallard. I stopped and looked around, but couldn't find the poor animal anywhere...

I continued my drive and arrived at Punt van Reide a bit later than I wanted. I got to work, but as expected the skies were grey. After about half an hour, around the time the sun should have been visible above the horizon, a few gaps appeared in the clouds and I managed to get this. Not bad! This was sort of a practice for next weekend, when I will attend David Noton's Jurassic Coast workshop, together with Ton and Herman. Definitely looking forward to that!

On the way back, I stopped again at the location where I hit the mallard. Even in daylight, there was no sign of the animal. I can't imagine it got away without any injuries, but I'm afraid there's nothing more I can do now...
