Wonky wall

This is Cropthorne parish church where I met a friend for a walk. I loved the miniature daffs ( tête-à-tête?) against the wall, but was intrigued by the fill in. Was there a big gap once?
We had a lovely if muddy 8 mile walk to Evesham and back . With a picnic !
