Scratch Dial

A long morning walk along the river Ouse to St Margaret of Antioch at Isfield. I blipped the church from the eastern bank of the river at the beginning of the month, but had never before walked the extra few miles down to the nearest bridge and back up the other side.

The scratch dial - an early medieval form of sundial - is on a south facing buttress where the stone has been cut flat for the incised marks but leaving a projection to serve as the gnomon. There are five incised marks either side of noon relating to the canonical hours of prayer.

A sundial related linoprint is now beginning to form in my mind.
