The Sun. A Comeback

Afloat in a milky sea, but not a sour one*

Living at the liquid edge of the cauldron that is the Scapa Flow doesn’t encourage a quotidian hitting of the heights.  Daily, we see Wee Fea (at nighttime its neighbour Binga Fea, with its winking red eye) protects.  Three main Hoy Hills dominate; the Knap of Trowie Glen, the Ward hill and the Cuillags.  On Mainland the Northern approach is guarded by Midland Hill, another Ward Hill, Keeley Lang, Wideford Hill and the peaty lands of Hobbister.  Skewing to the open airt of the south east gives the raised pancake of Hunda and the Southern Parish.  Due south is the upturned floating plate of Flotta.  We are awarded (!) with an occasional glimpse of Caithness in the cone of Morven – 58 miles distant.

Nine islands we see; two seas coalesce around us.  Rarely at rest.

The above litany is from memory for today none of it has been visible.  We are afloat in a 5 centigrade swirl of north west moistness; all pervading.  Dipping in and out.
