Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Echoes of the past

Whilst walking across the dunes this morning we came across this primitive yet enigmatic iron figurine. After discussion with an archaeology friend I have come to the conclusion that it is, without doubt, an antiquity of ritual significance, probably a representation of Fenrir, also called Fenrisúlfr, the monstrous wolf of Norse mythology. Presumably lost by some passing Viking band of brothers.

Mts T on the other hand thinks that it is a rusted bit of the wall of scaffolding poles that was built on the beach in 1940 in anticipation of a Nazi invasion. What a silly idea!

What great fun this do-it-yourself archaeology, for amateurs and dreamers, is!
