Red-breasted Nuthatches are as speedy as their sleek shapes suggest!
They're tiny -- 4.3 in / 11 cm long, weighing o.3-0.5 oz / 8-13 g -- and have a lifespan of about six years. I think this is a bonded pair, as I've seen them fly in for a snack at our feeder several times now.

There's loads of fascinating information about them here, including "Nuthatches are among the few non-woodpeckers that excavate their own nest cavities from solid wood... Males feed females while the females excavate nest cavities" and "Males court females by turning their backs to them, singing, and swaying from side to side with crest feathers raised..."

And earlier today, on the opposite side of the United States -- 3,219 miles /6,296 km apart -- my Blipfoto friend Memories4Me posted a close-up photo of one of these active little birds at her suet feeder!
