Pitaya..

.. is its 'proper' name but sold in the shops here as Dragon Fruit and also known as strawberry pear.
Our local Asian greengrocer has big boxes of these when in season and they look so funky in candy pink and green.

Native to Mexico, Central and South America they are grown in Asia and on one little plant in our street! The flower is spectacular, large, white and fragrant and blooms at night, and as a result are called moon flowers.

Despite the rather splendid jacket, the fruit is quite bland and taste a little like kiwi fruit. Not as tasty but definitely as seedy and crunchy!
