Lennox Head

The name Lennox Head was given in 1828 by (Royal Navy) Captain Henry Rous, in command of the naval vessel Rainbow. I'm avoiding the word discovered here - the Bundjalung (First Nations) people had already lived here for countless thousands of years. And still do.

Rous named the head after the fifth Duke of Richmond whose family name was Lennox. He also named the nearby Richmond River after him. There is more information about Rous in the Australian Dictionary of Biography so I won't dwell on him any further. Except to say that his name is now only known locally for the Ballina hotel named after him.
