Celebrating in Savannah!

Today we were celebrating 44 years of marriage. We were on the road by about 9.30, completing our journey to Savannah Georgia. We had been to Savannah once before, to celebrate my birthday on that occasion, but quite a number of years ago now. We arrived in Savannah early afternoon, and checked into our Bed and Breakfast. It was an overcast day, and not as warm as we were expecting. Our accommodation was nearby Forsyth Park, shown in the large upper photo, and the lower left. We then continued walking down to the riverfront, passing through a number of Savannah’s beautiful squares, shaded by live oak trees draped with Spanish moss, and often home to a large monument honoring historic figures. In Reynolds Square, fairly close to the riverfront stands a bronze statue by Marshall Daugherty honouring John Wesley, founder of Methodism, who undertook a mission to Savannah from 1735-1738, during which time he founded the first Sunday School in America.. The statue (top right) was installed in 1969 on the spot where Wesleys home is believed to have stood. One of the sights which surprised us the first time we visited Savannah was the sight of large container ships heading up river to the docks - we hadn’t realized that Savannah is one of the largest ports on the east coast. We had a stroll along the riverfront before returning to our B&B to change before going out for a celebratory dinner - remaining two photographs.
