Today we walked past hundreds of lambs in fields but I had never seen any wearing plastic coats before. The recent very cold weather and snow showers will have made some tiny lambs very vulnerable to hypothermia and these two lambs look very young.  Hypothermia can often cause newborn lambs to become too week to suckle.so they could die of starvation.  One solution is to put on a biodegradable jacket which will fall off as the lamb gets bigger and stronger.  The two lambs seemed to be soaking up the sunshine and were probably oblivious to their strange attire.
Earlier we had watched two lapwings repeatedly attacking a heron which had quietly been standing like a statue gazing into a large pond.  Eventually the heron flew off to stand near some bushes leaving the lapwings to wander among the reeds but if they were nesting it seemed a rather damp location.
