Tortoiseshell on Cuckoo Flower

In a way I was quite surprised to find this small tortoiseshell butterfly feeding off cuckoo flowers along the canal.  The flowers are there every year but it's much more usual to see them occupied by orange tips.  However my butterfly's quite a tatty one and has certainly spent the winter in hibernation so I expect the nearest food source was very welcome.

In case you're wondering, cuckoo flowers are also known as lady's smock, though maybe that's rather an old-fashioned name for them now?

Hazel and I have been alone today, so this was our morning walk.  The rest of the day's been spent very happily in the garden.  Bliss!

Hope your weekend's been/is being a good one  xx
