The Birthday Party

Out mid morning for a work party around the harbour. The gruppenfuhrer, WB, and myself. As usual, much time lifting sinkers, inspecting chain and deciding we’ll need to come back on a later date.
Back to chat with WB awhile over a coffee and letting him share his worries. He knows more about young people than most, and not just because he was once one himself. As he observed, we are all prone to put on the rose coloured glasses when looking at our past. But then again, neither of us could recall people in our school class self-harming or suffering from anorexia so badly that they end up hospitalised.
Home to freshen up and then head up for the Birthday Party! The last lockdown birthday, hopes the daughter. And a more enjoyable day than one year ago, she did admit. And how very lovely it all was. And best of all when I waved goodbye, the wee one seemed quite sad, and cried aloud. Good girl!
