This is the first Speckled Wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria) that I have seen this year when I had to very quick to get a photo.  A few years ago I would not have found any locally as it was not recorded until 2009 when 2 were found and only 1 in 2010.  Since then it has spread throughout East Lothian and the latest statistics I can find are that in 2017 over 1100 were recorded and it was the second most commonly recorded butterfly. I think I probably saw more Speckled Woods than any others apart from Small Tortoiseshells last year but possibly because many of my walks are in the sort of habitats that they like.    For those who are interested this is informative about its spread in the East Lothian part of Scotland.
