Dawn

Today was International Dawn Chorus Day, so at 4.15am we left our house to walk  the few hundred  yards to Whiteshute Ridge, overlooking Winchester from the south. Early  birds included several Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Robins, Chiff Chaffs, and Whitethroats. This photo was taken at 5.30am, looking towards Winchester and the Itchen valley, which were shrouded in mist. However, you can just make out the cathedral on the left, and a very tall crane to the right of it.
Rather disconcertingly, while I was taking the photo, we  detected the smell of bread baking! The source: the large Sainsbury's store, out of sight, being hidden by  many trees, but further  down the hill to the left of us.
We then did a short walk of other local  haunts, saw  the sunrise, and were pleased to discover  Blue Tits and Nuthatches have taken up  residence  in two of the nest boxes on the Battery green space. Then it was back home for  a good breakfast!
Later in the morning I had an appointment to give blood, before later setting  off towards Watford to visit my Mother for a few days.
It's been a long, but enjoyable, day.
