Shuggie Bain

Has anyone else read this? My oh my.
What a powerful 'story'.
It's a novel inspired by the experiences of author Douglas Stuart. Shuggie (young Hugh)  is a Catholic boy growing up in 1980's Glasgow with an alcoholic mother and largely absent father. There are many ' uncles ' in his life, with brutal examples of toxic masculinity all around, yet at the same time  he begins to realise he is different. He adores his mother and tries so hard to protect her, and keep the pair of them going as one by one the support structure falls away.
It's both heartbreaking yet funny, despite themes of poverty, violence, unemployment, alcoholism, abuse and neglect running through . So beautifully written- the Glaswegian references and language give it depth and colour,  with humour and love shining out as little Shuggie tries to navigate through the tragedy unfolding behind him.
I recommend it whole heartedly. The reason I'm posting the cover today is it's a library book and I'm taking it back this afternoon.
