Fruits of the Garden by Paul Dibble; 2002

Early flight to Wellington this morning. Very straightforward flight; almost took longer from the time the plane landed to the time I got into the central city for the meeting, than the flight from Auckland.

Meeting finished in good time for an afternoon run along the waterfront, and I noticed this sculpture high up beside the waterfront route used by walkers, runners and cyclists.

A quick search and I found a little about the sculptor and the sculpture.

Fruits of the Garden sits at the edge of Frank Kitts Park, with the harbour as its backdrop. Framed by ferns, an apple sits on Polynesian female torso, evoking the combined imagery of the Garden of Eden and the Pacific.

Paul Dibble was born in Thames (New Zealand) in 1943. He works and lives in Palmerston North, casting his works with the help of highly skilled assistants. His works feature the human figure, as well as ordinary everyday objects. The history of New Zealand and the Pacific influences him, and is clearly important in this piece.

Dibble may be familiar to sone as the sculptor of the New Zealand War Memorial in Hyde Park, London.
