Sydenham Pit and Drainage Pumping Station

The Sydenham Pit and Drainage Pumping Station was constructed between 1935 and 1941. This area and beyond once comprised the Gumbramorra Swamp which had been largely drained by the early 20th century. Urbanisation of the Marrickville Valley revealed some drainage problems persisted and the construction of this pumping station partly solved them.

The Sydenham Pit and Drainage Pumping Station was heritage listed in 2002.

From 2019 the area over the storm water drain has been used for infrastructure for the new Sydney Metro train line. A new above ground aquaduct, seen in my photo in front of the pumping station enables its function to continue. The pumping station's design is a version of the inter-war Mediterranean domestic style.

Thanks for hosting Laurie54. My silent letter is the n in 'columns' which support the new aquaduct.
