Conservation corner

While visiting the Bridge of Allan allotments this evening I was shown the Conservation Corner run by Roy and Sue Sextons.
Among the rare plants is this stunning display of sticky catch fly, found only in a few locations in the UK. The nearest one is on the side of The Ochils  a few miles away.

This endangered species, thanks to the campaigning skills of the Sextons, has even got our local MSP Keith Brown ( Deputy Leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party) as its official species champion.

An unexpected side effect of the allotments regularly flooding from the nearby river Forth is that seeds are left.  Sue Sexton tells me she has even got wild pansies brought by flood water.

Meanwhile Ron Don (see extra) is one of many allotment holders with a flourishing display of comfrey which they grow to make organic fertiliser.

Certainly it’s all looking good for our Open Gardens event on Sunday. Now all we want is the weather.
