The Ferryman’s Cottage, Cramond

Looking at this cottage today, I was reminded of one of my earliest memories of Cramond - one dating from the 1950s.

I was reminded of the ferry across the River Almond that linked the village with the Dalmeny Estate on the opposite shore.

Believed to be the shortest ferry trip in Britain, the ferry was basically a rowing boat propelled by an oar from the stern.

The ferryman lived in this cottage and he would make his way across when summoned - usually by the ringing of a bell - by walkers wanting to continue their walks on the other side. The fare, I think, was 6d! (2.5pence)

Unfortunately the service was stopped in 2000 because of the Foot and Mouth outbreak and has never been restored.
