School's Out

Children and parents meeting up outside school at 3.30 is a familiar sight in our towns, and becomes part of the landscape. Bearsden Primary School (in the photo) has a hundred year history and is at the heart of a tight-knit community. Parents and grandparents bring life to the vibrant local shops and businesses. However the school is threatened with closure and amalgamation with a new school to be built at a more distant location. The overwhelming response from parents and the community has been to say no and to urge the adoption of a refurbishment plan.

With the issue still very much unresolved, when I was at Bearsden Cross today as the children flooded out, I thought it the perfect moment to capture a scene that 's not guaranteed to remain. Although it does not involve me directly, it makes sense that children should be able to walk to their primary school and benefit from fresh air and exercise at the start and finish of the working day, apart from all the other issues surrounding the viability of the town centre. So here's hoping that this attractive and thriving institution at the Cross does not disappear.
