Skara Brae

Top visit for Katie! In the winter of 1850 a fierce storm stripped the grass from the top of a sand dune in Skaill Bay, and revealed a prehistoric village built 5000 years ago.
It has been preserved almost as it was left when abandoned, with stone furniture including beds and shelves, and underground passages to protect the inhabitants from the weather. It was lovingly excavated by the Laird of Skaill, William Watt, owner of Skaill House.
It was further excavated by Gordon Childe in 1928, and again in the 70s. It’s really quite remarkable.
We also saw some resident Orkney voles!
