The town of Seventeen Seventy

I have always been intrigued by the town of 1770 due to it's unusual name. It is halfway between Rockhampton and Bundaberg on the east coast of Queensland. It is on an isthmus with the ocean on one side and a sand filled bay on the other. Captain Cook arrived here in 1770 hence it’s name. It is the most northerly surfing beach ( further north the Great Barrier Reef stops the good waves for surfing) and has no crocodiles and few stingers ( they have been found here occasionally). The main danger is from stone fish ( sounds scary). The population is about 600. The only industry is  tourism.

While we were there we went on a trip aboard a LARC ( Lighter Amphibious Resupply Vehicle) which was built for the US Army in 1965 during the Vietnam War. Most were destroyed after that conflict but there are a few hundred left which are used for tourist trips in places such as Iceland and Australia. It has huge wheels and floats … driven by a propeller while in the water. We went on and off the sand bars around the bay, lots of fun.

We went for a walk out to the tip of the isthmus where there were heaps of butterflies. I rarely see them at home but in one shot had three different varieties. I have also included some shots of the views both east and west. As you can see it’s a beautiful place.
