A Solar Analema.

The figure of eight track in this field is a solar analema, it's near the village of Pill, just outside Bristle. You can make one of your own by erecting a flagpole in your garden and then, every day for a year, you go out at noon and place a marker on the ground where the tip of the shadow occurs.

In the same way that a sundial tells you the approximate time of day, and is utterly reliable - assuming that the sun is actually shining, an analemma (provided you leave the flagpole in situ) tells you the approximate date, and is utterly reliable assuming that the sun is actually shining; there is just one small proviso, it only does so at noon. What could be more useful?

Alternatively, it could be where someone exercises their horse.
