These paperbark trees (Melaleuca quinquinervia) are growing on the shore of Lake Ainsworth nearby. The name melaleuca means black and white. The botanist who coined the name was describing the bark of a particular tree. It had black (mela) patches that resulted from a previous bushfire, and white (leuca) patches, the natural unburned colour. The trees are commonly called paperbarks.
