Stuff and Nonsense

Osprey #74

Our journey home today took just over 5 hours, but we split this in two and visited the Dyfi Wildlife Centre on the way, as we were passing it anyway. It's 3 years since we have been there but during lockdown last year they totally rebuilt the welcome centre which was just an old portacabin with an outside loo!  Now it is a lovely new building with indoor toilets, a café and an exhibition area. The feed from the osprey nest is amazing quality and even though the nest platform is only 200m from the viewing area, it's still a long way away for a shot. This one was taken and then very heavily cropped, so it's not great, but you get the idea. This is Idris, the male, on his perch. It's his second year here breeding after Monty, the previous male who had been breeding each year since 2011, failed to turn up last year. Telyn, the female, who has been breeding here the last three years, once again returned and laid 3 eggs which all hatched. Unfortunately, the middle chick was suffocated and died after about 24 hours, but the other two chicks have just been ringed and are doing very well indeed.
