Hailstorm

Thunder blossoms gorgeously above our heads,
Great, hollow, bell-like flowers,
Rumbling in the wind,
Stretching clappers to strike our ears . . .
Full-lipped flowers
Bitten by the sun
Bleeding rain
Dripping rain like golden honey—
And the sweet earth flying from the thunder.

Storm Ending, by Jean Toomer

Overheard while purchasing vegetable fried rice in town:

"Did you hear, apparently a tornado blew through somebody's house in Franklin.
     Really?
Yeah they say there's hail in Trenton right now. People are supposed to get inside."

Fortunately I was only a few minutes from.home and had time to take this photo. I got the distinct feeling it would, indeed, be better to go inside. The sun was swallowed up, rain started, lightning flashed, thunder roared, and the hail came down, even larger than last time. We sat on the porch and marveled at it. It was pretty wild. A few minutes later it blew right through and grew light again.

Hopefully tomorrow will be cooler.
