Historic St. Mary’s City

Happy Canada Day!!

Today’s blip was inspired by my friend Melanie (WVgirl) who recently returned to our old stomping grounds for a visit. This is an old photo from St. Mary’s City, Maryland where many field trips were spent.  St. Mary’s City was the first settlement in Maryland and the 4th in the United States. These people are re-enacting activities on one of the two original (rebuilt) ships, The Dove. This settlement was the home of religious liberty in the U.S. It’s specific purpose was to be a safe haven for both Catholics and Protestants.

The rural parts of St. Mary’s Count are beautiful. It’s a peninsula nestled between the Potomac River and the Patuxant River. The latter empties into the Chesapeake Bay just past the Pax River Naval Air Station. Continue a little further south to Point Lookout where the famous Potomac River flows into the Bay.

There’s so much I miss. It’s nice to still have a couple of connections;  people with whom I am still in touch, like Melanie. She took this photo of the Solomon's Island bridge which crossed Pax River that used to freak out my mother because it's super high and arched, presumably so Naval vessels could pass.
