Westerwick

Today we explore West Mainland, a beautiful area of rolling hills, lochs, peat-rich moorland, pretty little settlements and stunning coastal scenery. It’s our third day of sunshine - we certainly didn’t imagine driving around Shetland with the top down on the Golf! It makes up for the chills we had some days in Orkney, but I suspect there will be payback on the days we’re due to spend on Unst!

It’s been a gentle day of short walks from the car as G drives the route he’s worked out from the guide book. And I’ve needed that, having very much ‘hit the wall’ of travel at the moment. I really feel exhausted - and tomorrow we have a 5.30 am boat trip out to Noss to see the seabirds in the morning light. That is, unless the current mist develops into fog and the trip is cancelled ……

So today’s main is the seascape at Westerwick - majestic stacks and razorback ridges rising from the bluest sea. In extras, apple-core beaches or tombolos and a rather vocal redshank.

Thank you for your comments stars and hearts once more - I’m trying to acknowledge them and catch up on your journals, but I’m afraid I’m always playing catch-up.
