Not the image I had in my mind for ANZAC day, but I slept through the rainy dawn service comemorating the New Zealanders and Australians lost to war or, now, anyone who has been or is involved in war.

I normally go to these ceremonies to remember my Grandfather who was stationed in the Pacific in world war two, whose twin girls were born while he was at war (my mum and my Aunt Shona), and my other Grandfather who was a wharfie and so stayed home to fill the holds of ships with meat and wool and flax rope to feed and clothe the allies, and my Uncle Harold who was in the Navy and very young.

Today though I got out my boat and paddled in the harbour in the rain and the quiet and remembered that way.
