The cows of St Ninian's

The last hour or so of my stay on Shetland was a quick trip to St Ninian's Isle. We drove through a herd of Shorthorn, mothers peacefully grazing in one end of a field, calves frolicking in the other. They were a deep, rich red with a variety of markings; really attractive beasts.

St Ninian's Isle is connected to the Mainland by a great sweep of beach, a tombolo. I've noticed that there's a large number of beachhead banks at the top of long voes with small lochs behind but can't quite work it out from Google if these are ayres or not. But anyway, it's interesting to see such a preponderance and I need to find out more about how/ why they're formed.

A short and uneventful flight home to be met by LH and Berry and then lunch at the Fossil Museum in the sunshine. Good to feel the sun on our backs sitting outside and to potter home.

We then worked in the veg garden, LH making anti-rabbit mesh sides to the raised beds (it would be a massive and useless job to fence the whole area, we think!) and me weeding the pathways. Quite hot work but a massive improvement.

Early to bed. I didn't sleep well when away and need a catch up!
