FLOWER FRIDAY

Birdfoot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus); this plant is everywhere along the roadsides of Sheboygan County. This was shot along the bicycle trail that parallels Hwy 23.

This is an invasive of the Pea Family (Fabaceae); native to Eurasia and North Africa. Most likely an escapee from a garden somewhere but it has surely found a new home. I have seen it almost everywhere east of the Mississloppy River. In it's native areas it is used as a forage crop for livestock because of its non-bloating properties.

Photo makes it look taller than it is due to the low angle...typically along roadsides it rises only 2-8 inches (5-20cm). Personally, I think it's pretty and adds a brilliant yellow border to our county roadways.

Clearest in Large.
