A treat

Not far from Sheffield is one of England's regrettably few remaining outdoor swimming pools: Hathersage pool. Sometimes it gets called a 'lido' these days, but for me it will always be Hathersage pool. When Jack and Ruth were young, we would drive  there on hot days to splash in the then very cold water, take in the smell of the creosoted wooden walls around the changing cubicles and eat ice creams afterwards (or chips if the weather was chilly). It all reminded me very much of the outdoor pools I had swum in as a child, notably one in Trowbridge (Wiltshire).
Things have moved on a bit since then. Some serious fund-raising has been done to safeguard and improve the pool.  The water is now quite generously heated, and the pool stays open for most of the year, not just the summer months.  Farewell to the creosote-infused cubicles, now replaced with something much blander (and probably healthier).

In summer you can swim while swifts scream and swoop overhead; in winter, you might see snow on the gritstone edges of the Peak District in the distance, while steam rises from the pool itself.  You can't take photos inside any more, hence today's shot of the pool cafe instead.
Of course Covid has meant long months of closure for the pool.  Now open again, numbers are tightly limited and you have to lurk online once a week to book a swim; they release tickets in batches, and they sell out fast.
Today I'd booked an early session, as those seem less popular; can't think why :-)
What bliss. The first outdoor pool swim since Sept 2020, followed by carrot cake and hot coffee.
