Painted Lady

This morning I went for a walk around Colemere.  I didn't see many butterflies on my way around until I came to a tiny sunny patch with ragwort, knapweed, rose bay willow herb and other weeds.

In this very small space I saw Painted Lady, Small Skipper, Green-Veined White, Gatekeeper and Speckled Wood.  It shows that conditions have to be right.

I chose the Painted Lady as it's only the second that I've seen this year.  It's a beautiful migrant butterfly which flies from Africa in two stages.  It's amazing that such tiny delicate creatures can fly such distances.
