Stalking Bees & Hoverflies

I spent some time this afternoon stalking insects around the fuchsia bush with the 600mm end of my Sony rx10. I was surprised to see that the 500th second shutter speed managed to freeze the wings of the hoverfly (see extra) but in no way slowed the wings of a hovering bee. To the naked eye the wing beat of the overfly looks a lot faster than that of the bees.
