Mailbox graffiti

Why? 
I'm wondering if someone threw a cup of coffee at the mailboxes. If so, I hope none of the liquid got inside!  I think whatever it is would be thicker than coffee though, maybe spray paint. I don't understand why some people enjoy defacing things.
