Swiss National Day

Today, the first day of August means something special in Switzerland:

Founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.  Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. This alliance was to become the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years.


So a special breakfast table this morning: raisin and walnut buns decorated with the Swiss flag, Tresse (plaited bread),  ewe's cheese, orange juice, cherry jam. honey and coffee with cream!


I loved finding these Swiss cow napkins showing a well-known Swiss breed called Simmental Cattle. The flowery head decoration is used to decorate cows when they come down from the mountain pastures at the end of the summer.
