Today's Outing

The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, on Monterey Bay. Looking over the slough towards the Moss Landing Power Plant in the distance. A pleasant walk over several trails, somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5 miles, depending on whose app you look at. We saw a couple of acorn woodpeckers, lots of herons and shore birds and pelicans, and a woman who was so charmingly excited at having seen an American goldfinch. I did catch a glimpse of bright yellow in the reeds, but I don't have the patience of a real birder. It was a lovely outing, less than an hour from home, and a great reminder of what a rich environment we have.
