Pottery Pieces

Today's the day ..................... to come back to earth

Well that was good fun.  Thank you for all the attention yesterday which has completely gone to my head (?!)  You really do say the nicest things - and we're both feeling very pleased with ourselves!

Today though, life was back to normal for me and it was business as usual at the Tongland Abbey Dig.  It's all progressing well there and the above are some pieces of mediaeval pottery that were found today.  It's all a bit mind-blowing when you remember that they have lain in the ground for upwards of 800 years - but still retain the texture and colour of the glaze.

They were found in a part of the abbey buildings that seems to be throwing up all sorts of questions as to what was going on there.  The latest theory (formulated today) is that it might have been a sort of 'Brewhouse' where the monks made their own ale.  Apparently this was a common practice, certainly in some abbeys.

Let's hope we can find more clues as the Dig progresses .......................
