Schiermonnikoog

The last accessible island of the Wadden Sea in the Netherlands is Schiermonnikoog, which is also the smallest inhabited island in this continent. I know the isle, because being not far from Groningen, I used to visit it for a day with family or friends. It always used to be such a happy day.
We cycle from the harbour in Holwerd to the harbour at Lauwersoog, across the mainland and were just in time to get on the ferry.
Once on Schiermonnikoog we did not cycle far because there was a wind force 5. It was a chaotic hustle and bustle in the only village of the isle. Buses to the ferry, streets full with hikers and bicycles. Lots of bikes.

This brings me to the last review;
Schiermonnikoog is sixteen kilometres long and four kilometres wide.  The nature is as on the other islands and it has only one village.
Whether Schiermonnikoog still has the same appeal as before, I doubt. And in general, the hustle that we found in every village was very dominating. The roads and cycle paths on every island were mainly straight, which was very boring. The nature is beautiful, with lots of different species of birds.
Both on Vlieland and on Schiermonnikoog you need special permission to take your car to those islands.

Tomorrow we will continue our 'tour the Netherlands' on the mainland.
