A day in the life

Eagle Hill

We've had a gorgeous day today, of which most of it was spent indoors rehearsing and finding repertoar but in the afternoon I got out for a longish walk on "Alvaret", the great plain covering most of the southern part of the island.

I decided to follow the trail past the "Eagle Hill", Örnkullen, a rather short walk of about a couple of kilometres. Eagle Hill sounds impressive but but you have to remember that the highest point of the island is 54 metres and Alvaret mostly looks like it does in the main picture. The Hill itself is more like a small ridge of about two and a half metres high but it's true that you get a fabulous view once you climbed it. You'd get the same view from the the ground below but it feels mentally rewarding to be on something a little  higher than sea level.

There is so much to see though, if you are a bit of a minimalist. All plants are very small and low, because of the exposure to the weather but there is an abundance of plants, some of them only grows here in all of Europe and maybe somewhere in the plains of Mongolia.

I'm always impressed by the labour the farmers had to do to stack the stone fences marking the borders of the parish, all of them about a meter to a meter and a half, like the one in the picture. The work must have taken so much time, time they could have used getting food on the table for their own families. The least I can do is to respect and admire their work.
