Preparations for a migration

Our night at Styresholm, next to the Ångerman River ,was a little chilly. In the morning the interior of the camper was about 10°C. We have good bedding so we were warm but getting up was a chilly activity. Jan had not slept well early in the night and so she was still asleep. I threw on virtually all the clothes I had with me and went out to photograph the geese flying overhead.
There were thousands of geese on the river and many of them had flown away from the river as soon as it got light, to the crops they were feeding on. Now they were full of food and returning to the safety of the water.  In the extra there are 63 geese and similar groups had been coming over for at least an hour before I left the van. I stood on the small rise, by that stone, for at least another hour watching similar numbers come over every minute.
It's a noisy business. They talk to each other as they fly, honking so loudly that you hear them a good few seconds before you see them. Then there's the hiss of air past their feathers when they are just a few metres above you. They are fattening up, and toning their muscles and lungs, for their long flight south. What a spectacle, what a privilege to see.
A little later the sun came out and the world warmed up. We drank our coffee sitting in the sun, feeling warm and at peace with the world before heading off to Sandslån.
