Doric, Ionic, Corinthian

We were very relieved this morning when we awoke to just 4 inches of snow and roads clear enough for us to get to Birmingham Airport without much trouble. By 10am we were in Edinburgh, and after checking in at out hotel we visited Holyroodhouse.

This view inside the palace Quadrangle shows how the three classical orders of architecture were used in the building's design. The columns of the lower tier are in the Doric style, those on the middle tier use the more decorative Ionic, and the most ornate Corinthian columns appear on the top tier.
